4.0 Gaya sraaddha

It is every son’s duty to go to Gaya after the demise of his parents and conduct Gaya sraaddha. Apart from delighting the pitrus his act bestows eminence on his family as well.. I performed the same in the following way :

18-10-2005 Prayaag Sangam Snan (bath) in the Triveni and  Hiranya Sraaddha , puja at   Triveni with the assistance of the Panda and return to Varanasi  19-10-2005 Perform Ganga snana (bathe in the river Ganga) under the Mahasankalpa, do Tirtha Sraaddha etc. at Kasi, 22-10-2005 Perform  Gaya sraaddha at  Gaya. As per the procedures, Pancha Ganga ghat sraaddha and Dampati puja (worship by a couple) are to be carried out after Gaya rituals and return to Varanasi. However due to exigencies, I had to return to Hyderabad and so performed these on 21-10-2005 itself at Varanasi, .

Three Vaidika karmas are important at Kasi :1. Ganga snana 2. Tirtha sraaddha 3. Darshan of Annapoorna Visalakshi sameta Viswanatha Swami and of Kala Bhairava

4.1 Prayagraj Sangam

Sangam in Sanskrit means the confluence of two or more rivers. In the literal sense, it means union. Triveni Sangam is the union of three rivers –  in Prayagraj, the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati meet. The point of their meeting is called Triveni Sangam.

Prayagraj Sangam

The Sangam is the place where the clear waters of the Ganga merge with the greenish Yamuna and the underground Saraswati. This place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh is believed to be the union of three Goddess, who are the consorts of the trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Ganga is the consort of Shiva, the Yamuna is the consort of Vishnu’s Krishna Avatar while Saraswati is the consort of Brahma. These three Goddess represent the trinity that is responsible for creation, sustenance, and destruction.

Moreover, Ganga symbolises dispassion, Yamuna represents devotion while Saraswati epitomises knowledge. All these are also the traits of the trinity. Brahma is knowledge, Vishnu is devotion and Shiva is dispassion. Therefore, by taking a dip at Sangam, one can seek the blessings of the three Goddess and the trinity.

As per the legend, Vishnu was carrying a Kumbh (pot) of amrit (nectar), when a scuffle broke out and four drops were spilled. They fell to earth at the four Tirthas of Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. A tirtha is a place where the devout can attain salvation. The event is commemorated every three years by the Kumbh Mela, held at each tirtha in turn; the Sangam is known as Tirtharaj, the ‘King of Tirthas’ and here the Kumbh is held once in every twelve years, which is the greatest and holiest of all.

It is here that the Kumbh Mela, the holy congregation of the Sadhus, saints and the devotees takes place  It is said that by taking a dip at the Sangam, one can rid himself/herself of all his sins and attain Moksha. This confluence relieves devotees from the vicious cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is the largest religious congregation in India, attended by millions. The over month-long fair is marked by the construction of a massive tented township, complete with cottages, huts, platforms, civic facilities, administrative and security measures. It is organized immaculately by the government, the local authorities and the police.

Prayaag derives its name from a magnificent Yaga conducted in this city by Brahma with three agni’s  (fires) – Aahavaneeyam in the east, Gaarhapatyam in the west and Dakshinaagni in the south. Prayaag, also called ‘Tretagni Prayaag’ for this reason, is situated to the west of Ganga, north of Yamuna and south of Akshaya Vata. The Rig Veda accords Prayaag a very special place. Bhagiratha, as we all know, was responsible for bringing Ganga to the earth. Thanks to his prodigiousachievement, not only did the pitrus of Bhagiratha but those of countless other human beings since  then have been blessed by Ganga Mata.

Normally pilgrims from south come to Prayaag first after alighting in Allahabad, complete the rites  here and then proceed to Kasi.

After the 18-day war of Mahabharat Yudhishtra  realizes that along with his brothers he has been responsible for the deaths of countless blood relations of theirs, he is dumbstruck by the enormity of the sin that would accrue to them. He seeks from Markandeya the way for absolution of the sins. Markandeya tells Yudhishtra that going  to Prayaag is the surest – nay, the only way to absolve himself and his brothers of the killing of his blood relations. and the mere setting of foot on its soil has the force equal to the conduct of an ‘Aswamedha Yaga’.

Accordingly Yudhishtra goes to Prayaag and performs penance as directed, and acquires the powerand glory that equip him with the ability to do great Yagas later, including the Rajasuya Yaga. He also gets the title of ‘Dharma Raja’, or Rightful King.Must visit Prayagraj Sangam and take bath and carry out the rituals for our ancestors.

The Vishnupad temple is the center for Shraddha rites in Gaya. The Brahma Kalpit Brahmins, who are also known as Gayawal Brahmins or Gayawal Tirth Purohit or Pandas of Gaya are the traditional priests of the temple from the ancient times.  Several legendary saints such as Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Vallabhacharya and Sri Ramakrishna have visited this shrine.

As per legend, once a demon  Gayasura, did a heavy penance and sought a boon that whoever sees him should attain salvation (Moksham). Since salvation is achieved through being righteous in one’s lifetime, people started obtaining it easily. To prevent immoral people from attaining salvation Lord Vishnu asked Gayasura to go beneath the earth and did so by placing his right foot on asura’s head. After pushing Gayasura below the surface of earth, Lord Vishnu’s foot print remained on the surface that we see even today. The footprint consists of nine different symbols including Shankam, Chakram and Gadham. These are believed to be weapons of the lord.

Gayasura now pushed into earth pleaded for food. Lord Vishnu gave him a boon that every day, someone will offer him food. Whoever does so, their souls will reach heaven. The day Gayasura doesn’t get food, it is believed that he will come out. Every day, one or the other from different parts of India will pray for welfare of his departed and offer food, feeding Gayasura.

The temple was built with the footprints of Lord Vishnu in the centre. This footprint marks the act of Lord Vishnu subduing Gayasur by placing his foot on his chest. Inside the Vishnupad Mandir, the 40 cm long footprint of Lord Vishnu is imprinted in solid rock and surrounded by a silver plated basin. The height of this temple is 30 meters and it a has 8 rows of beautifully carved pillars which support the pavilion.

Within the temple stands the immortal banyan tree Akshayavat where the final rituals for the dead takes place  On top of the temple is a gold flag weighing approximately 51 kg. Inside the temple is a (Garv ghiri ) a silver-coated hexagon railing also known as (pahal).

Sitakund is situated on the eastern bank of the river Phalgu just opposite the Vishnupad temple.  Lord Sri Ram, along with Mata Sita, came to offer Maharaj Dasharatha. Sri Ram & Lakshman went into the city to bring items for pinda daan and they were delayed. Time was up for offering  pinda and so Mata Sita offered  pinda to Maharaja Dasaratha with sand of Phalgu river which was witnessed by Phalgu river, Tulsi, Cow, Brahmin and Akshya vat.

When Sri Rama and Lakshman returned, Sita devi narrated this to them and they didn’t believe and Sitaji summoned the five witnesses. But none of them supported her except  Akshaya vat. So Sita devi cursed them all except Akshaya vat – She said Akshaya vat will be reverred by those who come to offer pinda daan and their worship will be successful only after worshipping Akshaya Vat.Must visit at least once in lifetime and do pinda daan to our ancestors…
